Voluntary action for undertaking development initiatives for rural and urban poor has been a strong movement in India . Historically, as derived from the cultural moorings, voluntarism to provide succor to the needy in the society had been strong presence. However, these actions were isolated and small in nature. Further, with spread of education and better awareness level among the learned society, the movement had registered strong presence in the country. The mass social movement in the form of Freedom Struggle has further sensitized the people concerned in the country to undertake voluntary action for the rural and urban poor in the form of a institution. As on today, India has strong presence of voluntary movement to meet the requirements of the needy. On the other hand, based on the historical and geographical condition several regions in the country were devoid of development initiatives in all its forms leading to lesser level of awareness and such areas have still been deprived off genuine voluntary action for the poor. This in context, Prathista Seva Samithi, a voluntary organization, was established to serve the rural and urban poor in the most backward region of Andhra Pradesh.
